Hi, my name is Kevin Barry, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and Registered Social Worker with nearly 20 years of experience working in the field of Mental Health & Substance Use. I am currently a coordinator at the new Surrey Mental Health & Substance Use, Urgent Care Response Centre. In 2016, I co-founded INSPIRIT Health Group which is a successful integrated health clinic located in Downtown, Vancouver. In 2017, I established Walk and Talk Therapy which was a new and innovative way to provide counselling. In addition to in-person therapy, I have also provided virtual counselling to clients across BC.

My areas of expertise include life coaching, working with individuals struggling with addiction, and those facing life stressors and relationship issues.

I believe that counselling should be a collaborative approach where we work together in resolving life’s challenges. We can work together to create a plan that will give you hope that your life can and will improve. My goal is to guide you to self-awareness and to help you gain greater clarity on your goals.

My educational experience includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from City University, Master’s Degree in Social Work from Eastern Washington University, and Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Troy University. Additionally, I served honorably in the military for four years before permanently moving to Canada.

We all experience difficulties due to many different life circumstances and we may struggle to move forward because of what happened in our past and fear for the future. I will help you develop emotional intelligence, unpack your stressors, and establish healthy coping mechanisms, that will propel you towards your ideal self and intended goals. I am trained to utilize EMDR, CBT, DBT and couple therapy. I am here to join the healing process with you by providing a safe space for you to create the tools you need to face your challenges with a renewed sense of purpose and self-efficacy.

I am a mental health clinician working within the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health Authorities. I meet clients with mental health concerns referred by hospitals, family doctors, and by self-referral. Additionally, I speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin, with the intention of providing cultural safety and respect within the healing process.

We are only human- we all struggle with anxiety, low mood, relationships or self-esteem issues that often leave us feeling stressed and overwhelmed. As a bilingual social worker/psychotherapist (English and Arabic),I am committed to providing non-judgmental support to help facilitate learning that allows you to better understand what is happening for you. I offer secure, on-line, walk and talk, and in person sessions. With a genuine, emphatic and personable style, we can work together to identify unhelpful patterns of thoughts and behaviors and to set achievable and clear goals such as feeling happier, healthier and empowered. My work with individuals draws from modalities including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Trauma Informed Practice. Counselling requires you to sit with discomfort, tolerate uncertainty, and express vulnerability. For many people, it can be their only opportunity to emphasize time for themselves and to experience a self-focused lens on their life. That is why I consider it a privilege to be welcomed into my client’s worldview and to have the opportunity to walk alongside them as they unpack their stressors and challenges.

I recognize that it takes a lot of courage to self-reflect and identify areas which you would like to improve. I consider it my ethical responsibility to create an environment where you feel you can thrive and above all, feel safe and respected. I do this by integrating several different theoretical orientations including Narrative therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavioural therapy all within a trauma-informed lens, in order to best meet my clients’ unique needs and goals. No client is the same and I endeavour to continuously further my professional development to ensure that I can offer my clients the most relevant treatment options and services.

I aim to help you develop the tools so that you can confidently navigate your journey as you fit. I encourage my clients to attach themselves to the process of personal growth and self-discovery rather than simply the end goal, as this creates opportunities to generate self-compassion and gratitude for your strengths and abilities. My goal is to help you shape your resilience and instil confidence that you have the capacity to meet life’s challenges without feeling overwhelmed or stuck.

I welcome you to reach out for a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to determine if I am a good fit for your counselling needs.
